Palliative Care: Care and Dignity in Difficult Moments
Palliative care represents a humanized and comprehensive approach that seeks to offer quality of life, comfort, and dignity to patients with serious, chronic, or terminal illnesses.
What is Palliative Care?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), palliative care is an approach that aims to improve the quality of life of patients and their families facing life-threatening illnesses. The focus is on the relief of suffering through the prevention and treatment of pain and other physical, psychosocial, and spiritual problems.
Contrary to what many people think, palliative care is not limited to the final stages of life. It can and should be started as soon as a diagnosis of a serious illness is made, being offered along with curative or disease-modifying treatments.
Principles of Palliative Care
- Relief from pain and other distressing symptoms
- Affirmation of life and acceptance of death as a natural process
- Neither hasten nor postpone death
- Integration of psychological and spiritual aspects in care
- Offer a support system to help patients live actively
- Offer support to the family during the patient's illness and in bereavement
- Multiprofessional team approach

- Optimized prescription of analgesics and opioids
- Anesthetic blocks for pain control
- Neuromodulation techniques when appropriate
